Spooky Practice of 3-Digit Numbers in Expanded Form

Teaching children to read and write numbers up to 1,000 can be tricky to understand; it’s not just writing the numbers correctly but also understanding the place value of each of those singular numbers. This super adorable and engaging foldable bat template will have your students exploring 3-digit place values in a fun way!

Students will record a 3-digit number in the following ways:

  • as a digit
  • in expanded form
  • using base tens
  • as hundreds, tens, and ones.

After recording their expanded numbers, ask the students to decorate their bats and cut them out. Instruct the students to then fold in the wings to make a 3-digit number expander.

While the bat can work at any time of year, this is the perfect maths activity for the Halloween festivities.

How to Use This 3-Digit Expander Template in the Classroom

Once printed, hand out to students and have them cut out the template to begin with.

To pick a number to expand, why not get the students to roll a die three times and write each number down to create the three-digit number they will have to expand and write in various ways?
