Tools for Teaching Coding For Beginners – Directional Cards

Directional cards are physical cards used to program or control coding robots. These cards provide a tangible and intuitive interface for designing and executing robot movements and actions. They are beneficial for teaching programming concepts to beginners, especially children, who may find it easier to understand and visualize instructions in a physical form.

The cards contain visual representations of different commands or actions that the robot can perform. These commands may include basic movements like forward, backward, turn left, and turn right, as well as more complex actions such as playing sounds, flashing lights, or interacting with objects.

Using Your Directional Coding Cards

Programming a coding robot using directional cards involves arranging and sequencing the cards in a particular order. By placing the cards in a sequence, you create a program or a set of instructions that the robot will follow when executed. For example, if you want the robot to move forward, you would place the “forward” card in the first position. If you want it to turn right after moving forward, you would add the “turn right” card next in the sequence.

Once the sequence of cards is determined, you can feed them to the robot using a card reader or by pressing a button on the robot. The robot performs the corresponding action in the given order. This allows for a hands-on, interactive experience that helps users understand the cause-and-effect relationship between the commands they provide and the resulting robot behaviour.

This set of printable directional cards is perfect for beginning users in coding robot scenarios. Instructions included are

  • forward
  • backward
  • left
  • right
