What Are Arrays?

Are your students familiar with arrays? This multiplication strategy can be helpful for learners to understand the concept behind multiplying two numbers together. An array is a way of organizing objects in rows and columns, like a table. Each item in the array has a specific location based on its row and column number. Students can use hands-on materials or drawings to represent different math facts.

If we take a look at the image above, we can see that there are 3 rows of stars. In each row, there are 5 individual stars. Students learn to skip count the rows and determine the total number of objects in the array.

Practice Drawing Arrays for Different Math Facts

Teach Starter has created a worksheet pack for your students as they are beginning to understand how repeated addition and multiplication facts are related. Inside this teacher-created resource, you will find 11 different worksheets for each of the multiplication facts 2 – 12. For each page, students will be presented with a repeated addition sentence. Students must then fill in the missing factor in the multiplication sentence, determine the product and draw a matching array.

This worksheet provides the perfect opportunity to get creative! Try one or all of these fun ideas for creating arrays:

  • Use small star stickers
  • Use dot stickers
  • Use Q-tips to paint dots
  • Use finger painting

An answer key is provided for each page to make grading quick and easy!
