What Are Inferences in Reading?

When we read, we often make inferences or educated guesses based on the information provided in the text, as well as our own background knowledge and experiences. These inferences go beyond what an author explicitly states and require us to interpret, analyze and draw conclusions based on implied or suggested information within the text.

As you are teaching your students about this important skill, they may be more inclined to pick up on this skill when asking questions about a person’s occupation based on their work environment or habits or possibly making an inference about a location based on the environment.

Making Inferences Passages for 1st and 2nd Grade

Giving students ample time to understand how to “read between the lines” is an important part of developing their reading comprehension. Teach Starter has put together a set of beginner-level worksheets to help your students make inferences.

This teacher-created resource comes with 8 different short stories where students must make an inference based on the text. Additionally, students are required to write down how they know their answer is correct, essentially preparing them to understand the meaning of text evidence.

These reading worksheets are equipped with primary writing lines to give your students adequate writing space as well as an answer key for quick and easy grading.
