A template to help consolidate students' understanding of coordinates.
Put students in pairs and ask them to draw 4 battleships on their page. They can be horizontal or vertical and must be four coordinates long. Students then need to take it in turns choosing a coordinate to see if they have hit their partner’s battleship.
There is space to record their guesses to ensure they don’t double up.

I found this template quite confusing as the numbers and letters are on the intersect rather than the box. My students were confused about which letter and number they were referring to. Perhaps having an option for having the letters and numbers centred in the columns and rows might be possible?
Hi Kate, thank you for your suggestion. We have added a second alternative with the number in the centre of the box.
I find that having the letters along the y-axis reinforces the misconception that those are to be said first. Children are more inclined to say 'K-6' than '6-K' for example.

I heartily agree. We want to get them used to X then Y. Though this resource is easily changed to fix that point.
