From Bills to Laws – The Core of Our Australian Democracy
How does Australia get its laws? By proposing, debating and voting on bills, of course!
A bill in the Australian Parliament is a proposal to make a new law or to change an existing law. If a bill is passed by the Parliament, the bill becomes law. It also becomes known as an
‘Act of Parliament’. Bills are created to address critical issues facing the Australian community.
Use this classroom poster when studying Australia’s system of government. The poster sets out the seven steps a bill must go through to become law. It is written in student-friendly language and contains helpful graphics to explain each step in the process.
