Story Starters for Kids

The first few sentences of a narrative text are extremely important. Once the reader has read the first few lines of a story, they will make a decision about whether or not to keep reading. One of the most effective ways to begin a narrative is to create a ‘hook’ to capture the reader’s attention. This PowerPoint presentation includes seven sensational methods that your students can use to begin their stories in an exciting and interesting way.

NAPLAN Writing

As Narrative writing is part of the Australian curriculum, it will sometimes be the writing element of NAPLAN. Creating a hook in a NAPLAN writing task is important as it’s the opening paragraph and will capture the reader’s attention. By using this resource to prepare your students for the NAPLAN writing task you are not only giving them the skills to be effective writers, but also giving them every chance to succeed in their writing task.
