Playing a game of “Simon Says” is an active and enjoyable way of introducing instructions to students. Instructions provide a wonderful basis for learning about the procedure text type.

Each instruction in the game contains a verb, a noun and an adverb/adverbial phrase e.g., Raise both arms into the air. When playing the game, encourage your students to identify each part of speech in the instruction.

Two versions of the instruction cards are provided in this teaching resource.

• The first set of cards is intended to be used as complete sentences. Cut out and laminate each instruction and display these on the board as you play the game.
• The second set of cards is intended to be segmented. Cut out and laminate the verbs, the nouns and the adverbs/adverbial phrases. Allow the students to create new instructions by making combinations of verbs, nouns and adverbs/adverbial phrases.
