How to Teach Plural Rules…That is the Question

As teachers, we understand the importance of helping children build strong foundational skills in spelling, which is a critical component of effective communication and academic success. But the question lies in how to teach those skills. Everyone has a different opinion, and there is so much information out there that it is hard for you to sift through and even more challenging for your students to understand. That’s where our Spelling Plurals Rule posters come in!

Our posters feature clear and concise strategies kids can use to improve their spelling abilities. These strategies are based on years of research and experience in the field of education and have been designed to be easy to understand and implement.

Each poster focuses on a specific spelling rule used in spelling words with suffixes and plurals, such as

  • Change y to I, and add -es
  • Change f to v, and add -es
  • Double the consonant and add -ing or -es

The colourful and engaging visuals will capture your child’s attention and make learning spelling rules a fun and enjoyable experience.

    • When a single-syllable word ends in a consonant and is preceded by a vowel, double the final consonant before adding ‘ed’ or ‘ing’.
    • When the suffix begins with a consonant, keep the silent ‘e’.
    • When a word ends in one ‘f’, change the ‘f’ to ‘v’ and add ‘es’.
    • Add’ es’ when a word ends in ‘ss’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘x’, or ‘z’.
    • Add’ es’ when a word ends in ‘o’ and is preceded by a consonant.
    • When a word ends in ‘y’ and is preceded by a vowel, just add ‘s’.
