Exploring Informative Texts Unit Plan - Year 1 and Year 2

Teach Starter Publishing
9 x lessons | Suitable for years: 1 - 2

This English unit has been designed to introduce the informative genre to younger students; specifically, the purpose, structure and language features of information reports.

It consists of 9 lessons of approximately 60 minutes duration.

The sequence of lessons and suggested time frames should be regarded as a guide only; teachers should pace lessons in accordance with the individual learning needs of their class.

An independent writing task, which may couple as an assessment task, is included in the unit. The number of lessons required to complete this task may vary from class to class.

This unit of work begins by addressing the overarching genre of informative writing, then focuses more specifically on information reports as an informative text type. The unit also begins by addressing the broad content focus of people, places, animals and objects; with animals used as a content focus in the later lessons.

Is there a marking rubric for this unit? The NAPLAN-style rubrics for the upper year's units are great and it would be useful to have a similar rubric for this unit.

Hi Amanda, thank you for your comment. We don’t currently provide rubrics for our units. As I’m sure you would understand, all schools are extremely different in the manner in which student understanding is assessed, recorded and reported and we cannot possibly create a rubric that would suit everyone. We do have a comprehensive set of assessment trackers linked to the Australian Curriculum which can be used to monitor student progress. These can be found here: https://www.teachstarter.com/teaching-resource-collection/australian-curriculum-assessment-trackers/ If there is anything else I can assist you with, please don't hesitate to contact me.

I can't wait to use this resource next term! I used the persuasive unit last year and loved it.
