How to Draw Santa — Directed Drawing Video for Children

Teach Starter Publishing
Years: 1 - 6

Teach your pupils how to draw Santa with a step-by-step video, perfect for directed drawing practice in the classroom.

What Is a Directed Drawing?

Not familiar with directed drawing in the classroom? That’s OK — our Teach Starter teacher team has put together a quick introduction. (Feel free to skip ahead if you’re already familiar with the concept!)

A directed drawing is exactly what the name implies — a drawing activity that comes with instructions. As a teacher, you slowly walk your pupils through the creation of a drawing, step-by-step, so even those who don’t feel confident in their artistic abilities can follow along. In addition to building confidence, the process of sharing one step at a time requires pupils to pay close attention in order to get the project just right — helping them focus, build hand-eye coordination, and learn to follow directions.

How to Draw Santa Step-By-Step Instructions

The Christmas holiday wouldn’t be complete without the jolly guy in the red suit! This directed Christmas drawing activity puts Santa in focus.

Santa Claus is often depicted as a chubby, white-bearded man in a red suit, riding in a sleigh pulled by reindeer. He lives at the North Pole with his friendly elves, who help him make toys for children year-round. On Christmas Eve, Santa and his reindeer deliver presents to kids all over the world, coming down chimneys and leaving gifts under the Christmas tree.

This directed drawing how-to-draw video walks children through a number of steps, helping them practise focus and concentration while they learn to draw the jolly old man himself!

Extension Activity Ideas for Your Christmas Holiday Lesson Plan

Once your pupils have learned how to draw Santa Claus, they can enjoy a variety of creative activities related to their Santa drawings. Here are a few fun ideas:

  1. Design a Christmas Card – Have your pupils use their newfound talent for drawing Santa Claus to create Christmas cards. They can add holiday greetings and give these cards to friends and family.
  2. Santa Storytime – Encourage your pupils to write a short Christmas story or poem featuring Santa Claus and illustrate it with their drawings. They can then share their festive tales with others. When they are done, create a fun Christmas display in the hallway, showcasing your pupils’ work for everyone to enjoy.
  3. Santa’s Workshop – Turn the Santa drawings into a craft project by making a mini Santa’s workshop scene. Your pupils can create tiny toys, presents, and elves to accompany Santa in a diorama or shadow box display.
  4. Santa Collage – Looking for a creative Christmas display idea? We have just the thing! Cut out and arrange different Santa drawings to create a colorful collage or mural.
  5. Christmas Decorations – Let your pupils transform their Santa drawings into holiday decorations by adding ribbons, glitter, and other festive embellishments. Hang these decorations on your classroom Christmas tree or around the classroom. Then, before your pupils head out for the Christmas holidays, send them home to hang on their own Christmas trees at home.
