A sorting activity to help students identify solids, liquids and gases.

Solids, liquids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways.

Print this chemical sciences teaching resource on thick card for increased durability. Allow your students to sort the cards into solids, liquids and gases.

Teacher note: One of the substances included in this teaching resource is toothpaste. Toothpaste is considered a non-newtonian fluid (neither solid nor liquid). It doesn’t have a fixed shape (like a solid) but nor does it flow easily (like a liquid). Leave this card in the activity should you wish to initiate a discussion about such fluids. Alternatively, you could remove this card from the activity.
