A 60 minute lesson in which students will revise and consolidate the concept of area.

Revise and discuss the concept of area and how square units are used to measure it. Revisit the Measuring Area Using Squares video on YouTube. Discuss instances where objects’ areas were measured with squares in class.
Explain to the students that, during this lesson, they will be completing a number of activities to revise area. Describe each of the activities listed below. Allow the students to ask questions and/or seek clarification where necessary.
Use the Geoboards on the Maths Zone website to make shapes and count the squares inside, or make shapes of particular areas.
Using grid paper and two dice, or one 10+ faced die, roll the dice and draw a shape with that number of squares as its area.
Find an object from around the classroom and trace its outline on a piece of grid paper. Count and/or shade in all the complete squares inside the outline to find the object’s area.
Create ‘creatures’ by making body parts with the following area dimensions: head (9 squares), body (12 squares), arms (3 squares each), legs (3 squares each), ears (1 square each). The creatures can be drawn on grid paper or made using informal square units e.g. sticky notes.
Measure the area of a plane shape or a small, flat object using circles e.g. counters, coins of same size/denomination. Then, repeat the measurement using squares e.g. game squares/tiles, small cubes. Note the measurements for each, then decide which shape is better for measuring area and why.
Monitor and support the students as they complete the activities. These can be completed as whole class exercises or as small group rotations (mixed ability groups are recommended). Each task should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Gather the class together and invite the students to share their experiences of the activities. Revise the definition of area and check for any misconceptions.
Encourage more capable students to assist less confident peers during group work.
Allow less confident students to be supported by more capable peers during group work.
