Birthday Pizza - Introduction to Fraction Addition
A teacher-facilitated problem solving introduction to fraction addition
Students are introduced to addition of fractions by exploring Jack’s birthday pizza.
This is one introductory problem to help students engage with new fractional content: addition. It is not intended to be graded.
Use with the whole class or small groups.
This activity includes clear and concise teacher directions, an answer key, and conversation starters that give students what they need to have meaningful academic discussions.

Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/b.
