Family and Culture Poetry Prompts – Task Cards

Free on Plus | 4 pages (PDF)|Grades: 1 - 4

A set of 16 illustrated poetry task cards to help students write about their family and cultural celebrations.

These task cards are designed to engage students with cute family and culture poetry prompts. These cultural poetry prompts are perfect for increasing writing skills, recognizing culture, and teaching multicultural awareness. Children can choose from any of these 16 illustrated poetry task cards and write a short rhyming poem about their family members or about cultural holidays or events, including:

  • Mom
  • Dad
  • Brother
  • Sister
  • Grandma
  • Grandpa
  • Easter
  • New Year’s Eve
  • Valentine’s Day
  • Diwali
  • Eid-al-Fitr
  • Hanukkah
  • Birthdays
  • Independence Day
  • St. Patrick’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Although the cards contain simple rhyming phrases designed to assist children who are learning how to repeat or combine text to form rhyming words, you might also like to remind children that they are welcome to write any type of poem and that not all poetry must rhyme. Students can write a haiku, acrostic, or concrete poem on each of the topics.
