A mathematics investigation about measuring distance, embedded in a real-world context.
This open-ended mathematics investigation has been designed to deepen students’ understanding of length.
In this investigation, students imagine they are entering a paper airplane competition. They must design three different paper airplanes to test before the competition.
The students test all three of their designs to see which one flies the furthest. They must accurately measure and record the distance flown by each paper plane, then use the information to make a decision about which design to enter in the competition.
This teaching resource includes:
- teacher notes, detailing a range of important information about the investigation
- a detailed description of the investigation for students, including step-by-step instructions
- planning and recording worksheets
- reflection questions.
This resource works great as a math center activity during your measurement unit.
