Paper Party - Choose the Right Operation
A small group activity focused on choosing the right operation to solve one-step problems.
In small groups, students read a problem card and secretly write the operation on a whiteboard. Then ‘1-2-3-Show!’ They show their operations and discuss why they are correct. After deciding the operation for each problem, students work together to solve the problems. Each of the problems uses the numbers, 1,200, 40 and 8. This forces students to choose the operation based on the structure of the problem instead of the size of the numbers.
8 problems on cards and a problem-solving recording sheet.
Use in small groups, during guided math, during tutoring or intervention, and in centers.
This activity includes clear and concise teacher directions, problems on cards, a recording sheet, and conversation starters that give students what they need to have meaningful academic discussions.
