  • Use quotation marks around direct quotes.
  • Do not use quotation marks for indirect speech.
  • Use a comma before direct quotes.
  • If the quotation is not a full sentence do not use a comma before the first quotation mark.
  • Keep punctuation marks part of the quote if it was originally part of the quote.
  • Use quotation marks for slang terms.
