Native American Tribes of Texas – Reading Comprehension

Teach Texas Native Americans Standards with Ease

Use these printable Native American tribe reading passages and comprehension activities to help your students learn about the many Native American tribes that settled in Texas. Kids will love these passages and mapping activities to increase their understanding of different Native American groups.

The following Texas standards are the focus of this group of resources.

4.1 History. The student understands the origins, similarities, and differences of American Indian groups in Texas before European exploration. The student is expected to:

-(A) explain the possible origins of Native American groups in Texas;

-(B) identify and compare the ways of life of Native American  groups in Texas before European exploration, such as the Lipan Apache, Karankawa, Caddo, and Jumano;

-(C) describe the cultural regions in which Native Americans lived, such as Gulf, Plains, Puebloan, and Southeastern; and

-(D) locate Native American groups remaining in Texas, such as the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, Alabama-Coushatta, and Kickapoo.

  • Provide read-aloud accommodations for students with special needs or partner struggling readers to assist with the reading.

  • Complete the reading as a whole group, then have students answer the questions independently.
