Phoneme Segmentation Worksheets

This set of worksheets has been created to consolidate students’ ability to segment words into 3 phonemes, 4 phonemes, and 5 phonemes. These worksheets are helpful for young students who are just beginning to develop their phonological awareness skills, as they provide a fun and interactive way to practice identifying and counting the number of sounds in words.

Students are only required to color the pictures with a certain number of phonemes, meaning they don’t need to determine what grapheme matches what phoneme. However, this is a way to differentiate this worksheet for students ready for this skill.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

To make this worksheet more challenging, have fast finishers have a go at writing the words of the images they have colored.

Provide only the 3 phonemes worksheet to students who may need a little extra assistance. You might also like to provide them with a sound box template to help reinforce and remember the number of phonemes they count in each word.

Easily Download & Print

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

To save paper, we suggest printing this 2-page worksheet double-sided.

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on cardboard and slipping it into a write-and-wipe sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse.

Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
