Digital Phonics Activities for Kindergarten Students

As teachers, we know how much our students love digital learning opportunities. But have you ever stopped to think about the advantages for teachers of using digital resources? No printing, photocopying, lost worksheets… just download, project, and teach! Brilliant!

This underwater-themed phonics resource consists of 19 activity slides. Each slide contains four CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, each with a letter missing. To the side of the slide are four letter bubbles. Students must start with the word at the top of the list, then drag and drop the bubble with the missing phoneme into each word. Once complete, the words create a word chain with one phoneme changing each time.

Tips for Extension and Support

This phonics resource has been designed to support your students in developing their phonemic awareness (the ability to identify the discrete sounds in speech). It’s perfect for whole-class lessons, guided group work, or individual practice.

Should you need to support or extend students in your class, you may wish to try the following ideas:

  • For students who require support, minimize the number of drag-and-drop options. Eliminate two of the letter choices and ask the students to choose between the remaining two to complete the word. Be sure to clearly segment each focus word into its phonemes when saying it allowed, e.g, p-i-g.
  • Challenge students who require an extension to add three more words to the word chain on each slide. Or why not let them keep going until they cannot think of any more words to add to the chain!
