Help Pupils Understand Personal Space

Helping children understand the concept of ‘personal space’ is crucial for their developmental and social interactions. Understanding personal space also helps children recognise situations that may make them uncomfortable or unsafe. They learn to identify and communicate their boundaries, empowering them to protect themselves and seek help.

This set of space-themed posters will be a great addition to your personal space lessons. The simple images clearly explain personal space and reinforce positive interactions.

Personal Space Activity Ideas for the Classroom

  • Personal space hula hoops – provide each pupil with a hula hoop and have them stand inside it. Explain the hula hoop represents their personal space.
  • Bubble blowing – have the children blow bubbles and observe how they can expand and touch each other, representing personal space boundaries – talk about what happens when the bubbles collide and how it relates to personal space.
  • Personal space collage – provide magazines, newspapers, etc., and ask children to create collages that show personal space. They can use pictures of people and objects that represent appropriate distances and physical boundaries.
