Shuffle Into the New Year With a Back to School Icebreaker!

The first day of school is upon us, and it’s time to start prepping for that first day back to school! In those first days, it’s critical that your pupils get to know each other and bond to build up your classroom community. Teach Starter is here to help you get ready with no-prep icebreakers like the Interview Shuffle!

Interact and Share Using the Inside-Outside Circle Strategy

This activity is designed to coincide with the Inside-Outside circle discussion strategy. To use this resource:

  • Arrange the class into two circles, an inner and outer circle, facing one another. Pair students with a member of the other circle or make groups of 3 if necessary.
  • Use a random number generator, pull a numbered lolly stick, or let a pupil choose a number to determine which question will be asked each round. Designate which circle will ask first and answer second.
  • Pupil 1 will ask the assigned question and listen to their partner’s response. They will ask any follow-up questions they may have. Then, Pupil 2 will ask Pupil 1 the same assigned question. They will take turns listening and speaking.
  • Call on a few pupils to share what their partner said (with their partner’s permission).
  • Pupils in the inner circle stay in their spot while those in the outer circle rotate one chair over. Choose a new question and alternate who speaks first.
