Full Day Plan
Mark the roll and record any absences on the Supply Teaching Day Feedback Form. Identify any students with special educational needs and ensure you are aware of any assistance they may require throughout the day.
Rules and Routines
Establish rules and expectations for the day with the students. Familiarise yourself with the regular routines of the class, as well as any additional activities happening during the day e.g. assembly.
Literacy – Reading Comprehension
Distribute a copy of the Comprehension – How to Make a Sandwich to the students. Read the text as a class. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the comprehension questions. Once the students have finished, discuss the answers as a class.
Literacy – Writing Task
As a class, brainstorm other ingredients that could be used to make the world’s best sandwich. Using some of the ideas suggested by the class, ask the students to design their own world’s best sandwich. Then, ask the students to independently write a procedure on how to make their sandwich. Once they have finished, encourage volunteers to share their procedures with the class.
Numeracy – Number and Place Value
Divide the students into small groups. Distribute a copy of the Number Grid Game to each group. Monitor and support the students as they work together to place the number cards correctly on their number grid templates. Once the students have finished, share some of the number grids with their solutions as a class.
Numeracy – Data Representation and Interpretation
As a class, brainstorm a list of appropriate survey questions that students could ask their peers. Provide each student with a set of Survey Data Collection Worksheets. Students create their own question(s), then survey the other students in their class. Students then represent their collected data using a graph. Encourage the students to share their findings with the class.
Literacy – Independent or Shared Reading
Allow the students to independently read an appropriate book of their choice. Alternatively, choose a book to read and share with the students.
The Arts – Visual Arts
Provide each student with a Rio Carnival Mask – Template. Explain to the students how masks are used in different cultures e.g. celebrations, costumes, performance. Show the students some examples of different masks from around the world. Supply a range of materials for the students to use when decorating their masks. If time permits, encourage the students to work together in small groups to create a performance (incorporating their masks) to present to the class.
