Roll Call
Mark the roll and record any absences on the Supply Teaching Day Feedback Form. Identify any students with special educational needs and ensure you are aware of any assistance they may require throughout the day.
Rules and Routines
Establish rules and expectations for the day with the students. Familiarise yourself with the regular routines of the class, as well as any additional activities happening during the day e.g. assembly.
Morning Session
Literacy – Reading Comprehension
Distribute a copy of the Comprehension – Preventing Childhood Obesity to the students. Read the text as a class. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the comprehension questions. Once the students have finished, discuss the answers as a class.
Literacy – Writing Task
As a class, discuss some of the issues raised about preventing childhood obesity from the comprehension. Ask the students to create a poster to prevent childhood obesity. Once they have finished, encourage volunteers to share their posters with the class.
Middle Session
Numeracy – Number and Place Value
Provide each student with a game board from the Place Value Bingo Game – Thousands. Pick a number card from the pile to call out. Students put a marker over the corresponding answer if they have it on their game board. When the students have covered five squares in a row, they call out ‘Bingo!’. The first person to call out is the winner.
Numeracy – Money and Financial Mathematics
Place the students into small groups. Provide each group with a set of catalogue pages and task cards from the Pandora’s Party Palace Maths Activity – Upper Years. Monitor and support the students as they solve each of the problem cards. Encourage the students to share their solutions and thought-processes with the class.
Afternoon Session
Literacy – Independent or Shared Reading
Allow the students to independently read an appropriate book of their choice. Alternatively, choose a book to read and share with the students.
Design and Technologies – Plan and Create
Display the set of 15 Design and Technology Challenge Task Cards on the board. Ask the students to choose a challenge from the set to work on independently or with a partner. Allow time at the end of the lesson for the students to present their ideas to the class.
