Natural and Processed Materials Video – Solid Wood vs Laminate

Teach Starter Publishing
5 mins | Years: 2 - 5

Explore natural and processed materials with this science experiment video perfect for your Year 5 science unit!

Explore Natural and Processed Materials… Without the Lesson Prep!

Which are stronger… natural materials (like wood) or human-made materials (like laminate)?

In this fun (and funny!) video that’s aligned with the Year 5 science curriculum, Krazy Kristian and Professor Paul will go on a journey to discover whether wood is stronger than laminate. Watch what happens as they add more and more weight to two identical wood and laminate rods to see which one breaks first!

By engaging with this science experiment video, students will:

  1. Explore the hypothesis that is to be tested in the experiment.
  2. Learn what makes a fair test.
  3. Collect, record and interpret data.
  4. Draw a conclusion that links back to the hypothesis.

The video also includes questions to help get your students thinking like scientists.

Best of all? We’ve handled all the materials, so you don’t have to worry about sourcing glue, sand, balsa wood and laminate. Nor do you need to worry about messing up your classroom!

Accompanying Resources for This Materials Experiment

To make your lesson planning even easier, we’ve created a printable experiment booklet that guides your students through the process followed in the video. This process is strongly grounded in the scientific method. Along with all the information about how to conduct the experiment, students are required to complete the following sections:

  • Variables
  • Hypothesis
  • Apparatus Diagram
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusion

Do your students need a refresher on what the scientific method entails? Our Scientific Method Poster provides a helpful overview!
