Revise the structure of narrative texts, as outlined on slide 8 of the Exploring Narrative Texts PowerPoint. Encourage the students to explain the purpose of the orientation, complication and resolution in a narrative text.
Read the full story of Hansel and Gretel to the class. (Note: The version of the story contained within the PowerPoint is a condensed version of the text. A full version of the text is available within the Hansel and Gretel Sequencing Activity Cards.) After reading, discuss the questions on slide 15 as a class.
Display and discuss the narrative structure of Hansel and Gretel, as outlined onslides 16-19. Remind the students of the importance of the complication within narrative structure (if nothing goes wrong, there would be no challenge for the main character and very little excitement for the reader).
Provide each student with a copy of the Story Map Template. Remind the students that the template can be used to create a summary (a shortened version) of all the important features of a story.
In small groups, pairs or individually, allow the students to complete the template for the story of Hansel and Gretel. Once they have finished, encourage the students to review the information on the template to ensure that all of the key details have been included.
Gather the students together. Encourage volunteers to share their story maps of Hansel and Gretel with the class. Encourage the students to comment on any similarities and differences in the responses presented.
Encourage students who finish the planning template quickly to complete a second template for another fairy tale they are familiar with.
Allow students who are finding the planning template challenging to work in a small group with adult support.
