Exploring Narrative Texts Unit Plan – Year 1 and Year 2
This English unit uses fairy tales to introduce the narrative text type to younger students. It addresses the structure, characters and language features of a narrative.
It consists of 10 lessons of approximately 60 minutes duration.
The sequence of lessons and suggested time frames should be regarded as a guide only; teachers should pace lessons in accordance with the individual learning needs of their class.
An independent writing task, which may couple as an assessment task, is included in the unit. The number of lessons required to complete this task may vary from class to class.

Objectives
- To explore the key features of the fairy tale genre.
- To identify the structure of a narrative text using fairy tales.
- To further explore the structure of a narrative text using fairy tales.
- To explore the methods authors use to create a character.
- To develop a character for a fairy tale.
- To develop a setting for a fairy tale.
- To develop a complication and resolution for a fairy tale.
- To use descriptive language to add additional detail to sentences.
- To independently write a fairy tale, using appropriate text structure, language and features.
- To learn and apply proofreading and editing skills.
Preparing for Learning
Develop a fairy tale classroom display before commencing the unit. Display word wall vocabulary, posters and learning goals that will stimulate the students’ interest and assist in their learning. Expose the students to a variety of narrative texts before and during the unit. Read and view picture books, traditional tales, short stories and children’s novels. Provide the students with opportunities to read and respond to short narrative texts. Some of the resources which accompany this unit plan will need to be prepared prior to teaching. For this reason, it is advised that teachers browse through all lessons before commencing the unit.
