What Do I Do If..? Setting Expectations for the Classroom

Setting expectations from day 1 is crucial for our pupils! Establishing a solid structure provides a predictable and secure environment that fosters success. When teachers establish clear expectations and procedures, pupils are empowered to confidently tackle different activities and transitions throughout the day. These expectations minimise disruptions and distractions, allowing pupils to fully focus on learning and achieving their goals

Give Your Pupils a Checklist of Classroom Procedures to Follow

This checklist will guide your students through a routine when they have independent work to complete.

Sections on the checklist include:

  • When I Get Started
  • When I Need Help
  • When Others Are Nearby
  • When I’m Stuck
  • When I Think I’m Done.

Print off a set of checklists on card, cut them out, laminate and provide one for each pupil to use with a whiteboard marker. This will allow the checklist to be wiped clean and used over and over.
