Writing Biographical Texts Unit Plan

Upgrade to Access | 9 x Lessons | Suitable for Grade: 6

This English unit addresses the purpose, structure and language features of the biography text type.

It consists of 9 lessons of approximately 60 minutes duration.

The sequence of lessons and suggested time frames should be regarded as a guide only; teachers should pace lessons in accordance with the individual learning needs of their class.

While the learning experiences in this unit have been specifically aligned to the Year 6 curriculum, the content may be modified to suit other year levels.

An independent writing task and an oral presentation task, which may both be used for assessment purposes, are included in the unit.

Teachers are encouraged to collect samples of students’ work throughout the unit to add to a learning portfolio. These can also be used to assess students’ understanding of the unit objectives.

Preparing for Learning

Biography writing provides excellent opportunities for cross-curricular integration. Look for ways to meaningfully integrate the unit with other learning areas, e.g. History, Science, The Arts.

Develop a biography writing wall in the classroom before commencing the unit. Display word wall vocabulary, posters and a ‘bump it up’ display that will stimulate the students’ interest and assist in their learning. For examples of teaching resources to display in your classroom, browse the Biography Writing resource collection on the Teach Starter website.

Expose the students to a variety of biographical texts during the unit. A wide range of high-quality biographies can be found at Biographies Online. The Free School channel on YouTube also has an extensive set of biography videos available.

Some of the resources which accompany this unit plan will need to be prepared prior to teaching. For this reason, it is advised that teachers browse through all lessons before commencing the unit.
