If you’re looking for some the ultimate upper years resources for this book, read Emma’s blog Diva-Worthy National Simultaneous Storytime Activities 2020 (Upper Years). For the little ones, read on and get excited!

National Simultaneous Storytime 2020

Unfortunately, not everyone will have their very own diva chickens to read this fabulous story. Get the kids at your school excited about National Simultaneous Storytime by having the Principal read the story and the teachers role-playing the different characters – what a hoot!

Alternatively, Emma Watkins from The Wiggles will be reading the story on storybox.com.

The Funkiest Activities for Whitney and Britney The Chicken Divas

After you’ve had a bit of fun with the story, each class can head back to their classroom and enjoy a fun, engaging, and purposeful activity. Here’s a list of 6 outrageously dazzling activities your students will absolutely love!

(1) Complete a Character Profile

Students can pick their favourite character and complete this fun Stage-Themed Character Profile.

In this activity, children are encouraged to think of three ways to explain their chosen character’s outside appearance and what their personality is like, so what they are like on the inside.

Your students will love opening up the curtains to reveal their chosen character.

Here’s a little preview of this fun resource:

(2) Create Cute Corner Bookmarks

Encourage a love of reading with these gorgeous character corner bookmark templates. Available to download in colour or black and white, these easy to assemble Fox and Chicken Corner Bookmarks are the perfect accompaniment to this delightful story.

Fox and Chicken Corner Bookmarks

We have a chicken just like Britney and Whitney and a fox just like Dora von Dooze.

(3) It’s Rhyme Time!

This children’s story is full of fantastic rhyming words that your children will notice straight away. Why not create a word search with all of the rhyming words and get students to colour code the words that rhyme. Alternatively, print the words out and have students match up the rhyming words from the story.

We used our Create Your Own Word Search Widget for the word search and also used our Colours of the Rainbow Word Wall template for the rhyming word cards.

(4) How Funky is Your Chicken?

Yep, we’ve done it again! We know you guys just love our funky craft templates. So, without further ado, introducing our Funky Chicken template.

Let your students experiment with line by decorating their cute Funky Chicken and then bedazzle with gorgeous glasses, some beautiful earrings and a sparkling tiara!

I have to say… this funky chicken is my favourite out of our funky craft collection (but don’t tell the others that).

(5) Complete a Book Review

Use this Stage-Themed Book Review Template with your students to summarise the story. It’s a great way to exercise students’ comprehension skills and give them a chance to review the story.

This template includes:

  • book information
  • favourite Character
  • star rating
  • favourite part of the book
  • setting description in three words.

After completing, your students can colour in the curtain, disco ball and microphone.

(6) DIY Microphone Craft

There’s no denying that the characters in this amazing story love to perform and sing. So we thought – why not get your students to create their very own microphone!

It’s really simple to do, all you need is:

  • paper towel roll
  • foil
  • jewels
  • paint.

Put on some disco music and get your students to shake their sillies out and sing at the same time!

And there you have it! Six dazzling, bright and cheerful activities that your early years students can do after they listen to this fantastic story. This is secretly one of my most favourite days of the year. We hope you enjoy your National Simultaneous Storytime!
