From the time of Cook’s intrusive exploration and the subsequent invasion by the First Fleet, land has been taken from Aboriginal People against their will. There are a number of ways to delve into this topic with your class.

The Land Rights timeline worksheet can be used as a class activity. Assign one event per student. Have them research the land rights issue related to their event and report back to class. Once everyone has reported back, the class can match the dates to the headings in several ways:

  • by completing the worksheet or
  • by creating a large timeline poster that incorporates the dates and the student’s research.

Alternatively, the timeline worksheet could be completed by an individual student based on current knowledge and internet searches.

After researching all the dates for the timeline, students can also complete the related puzzles:
