What Are Personal Connections to Local People and Places?

When exploring the interconnections of people and places, the best place to start with younger learners is to keep it local! The local area is one which is familiar to younger students, being that they interact with people and places in their local environment on a daily basis.

We all have connections to people and places in our local area. For example, someone might have a connection to a place because of an activity they do there. Alternatively, the connection to a place may be more strongly linked to the people you visit there.

Ready-Made Content About Local Connections

At Teach Starter, we understand how busy teachers are! It’s hard to find time in your overcrowded schedules to research and create teaching resources to accompany your units of work. That’s where our team of dedicated teachers steps in!

This teaching presentation is the complete package when it comes to teaching your students about their local area. Students will explore their connections to local people and places, and the factors that affect these connections.

The presentation is broken into two sections. The first section explores students’ personal connections to local places by exploring the following questions:

  • What is a connection?
  • How do we connect?
  • What is a local place?
  • What are some local places?
  • What affects our connection to local places?
  • How do distance and location affect connection?
  • Do we all share the same connection?
  • How do we show places on a map?
  • What are map features?

The second section of the presentation includes a series of slides where students must answer a series of mapping questions related to a town map using compass directions.

A mapping activity for students to complete independently is included at the end of the presentation.

Having engaged with the presentation, students should be well-equipped to answer the following inquiry questions:

  1. How am I connected to places in my local area?
  2. What are the factors that affect my connection to a place?
  3. How do we show places on maps?
