Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Students watch and listen to the video of Mem Fox’s story, Let’s Count Goats! on YouTube. At the end of the video, ask the students:
- How manyย goats were there at the end of the story?
- Can you show me what 10 looks like using your fingers?
- Who can write the number 10 on the board? Who can write it in words?
- As a class, brainstorm and record on the board the many different ways the number 10 can be represented.
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slides 12-13 ofย theย Counting Collections andย Connecting Numbersย PowerPoint.ย Discuss the three different ways that each number has been represented.ย Invite three students to show the number 8 on the board as a numeral, name and quantity.
- As a class, complete the activity on slideย 14. Check the answers on slideย 15.
- Complete the 1 to 10 Car Park Number Match activity as a class. After the cars with the numerals have been matched to their names in the carpark, use rolled-up balls of plasticine or blu-tack to attach the quantity for each number. You might like to pretend that each ball of plasticine/blu-tack is a piece of luggage in the car. As a class, count the quantities as they are attached to the cars.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Display and discuss slide 16. Place the students into pairs. Provide each pair with a pre-cut and laminated copy of the 0-10 Number Matching Game.ย Ask the students toย complete the activity by grouping each number by its name, numeral, dice representation and quantity.
- Monitor and support the students as they complete the task. Once the students haveย finished, complete the activity together on the board. Encourage each pair toย check that their cards match-up correctly.
Wrapping Up
- As a class, play a game of Number Trains from the ABC Splash website.
