Lesson 10: Practising Subitising
A 60 minute lesson in which students will quickly identify a small collection of objects with the use of subitising.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Revise subitising with the students by watching and listening to the Subitising video on YouTube. At the end of the video, ask the students:
- How manyย dots are in each collection?
- Was the collection of seven red dots easy to count? Why or why not?
- Could the collection of seven red dots be arranged differently? How?
- Invite two students to show on the board how they would arrange seven dots. Discuss as a class which arrangement is the quickest and easiest to subitise.
Teacher Instruction
- Display and discuss slide 9 ofย the Subitising Small Collections PowerPoint.ย Encourage the students to identify the smallest and largest collections on the slide.
- Provide each student with ten counters. Ask the students to count their collections. As the students start counting each item one at a time, stop them. Remind them that subitising could help them to count their collections more quickly. Encourage the students to rearrange their counters so that they are easier to count.
- After identifying how many counters they have, invite volunteers to share with the class how they arranged their counters. Demonstrate some of the examples on the board. As a class, decide which arrangement is the quickest way to subitise and count a collection of ten.
Guided/Independent Learning
- As a class, complete the activity on slide 10. Check the answers on slide 11.
- Display and discuss slide 12. Place the students into pairs. Provide each pair with a pre-cut and laminated copy of the Subitising 1 to 12 Domino Cards.ย Ask the students to use the cards to connect the dominoesย by matching the numerals to the dots, then sequence the cards from smallest to largest.
- Monitor and support the students as they complete the task. Once they have finished, sit as a class in a circle on the floor. Place a set ofย the cards in the middle of the circle and invite the students to match a numeral card to its domino card. Repeat the process until all the cards have been matched up.
Wrapping Up
- Place the students into small groups. Provide each group with a copy of the Subitising Leap Frog Game. Ask the students to use their knowledge of subitising to match the dots on the dice with the dots on the game board to make their way from start to finish.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Pair more capable students with less confident students for the independent task so that they may act as peer tutors.
Supporting Students
- Pair less confident students with more capable students for the independent task so that they may be supported by their peers.
Assessment Strategies
Suggested Assessment Strategies
- used strategic whole class or individual questioning
- observed student participation during learning activities
- recorded student progress on a checklist
- annotated student work samples
- collected and reviewed student work samples
- facilitated whole class or peer feedback sessions
- encouraged student self-reflection
- administered formal assessment tasks.
National Curriculum Curriculum alignment

- Mathematics
- Numbers
Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find t...
