Roll Call
Mark the roll and record any absences on the Supply Teaching Day Feedback Form. Identify any students with special educational needs and ensure you are aware of any assistance they may require throughout the day.
Rules and Routines
Establish rules and expectations for the day with the students. Familiarise yourself with the regular routines of the class, as well as any additional activities happening during the day e.g. assembly.
Morning Session
Literacy – Grammar
Use the Compound Words Poster to revise the concept of a compound word. Display the Compound Cards on the board and work together as a class to construct each compound word. Brainstorm a list of other compound words, then jointly construct pictures for each word. Distribute a copy of the Connecting Compound Words Worksheet to the students. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the worksheet. Once the students have finished, discuss the answers as a class.
Literacy – Writing
Use the Super Sentence Starter Sack as a writing prompt to display on the board. As a class, brainstorm a list of possible settings, characters, problems and solutions. Ask the students to independently write an imaginative text using the sentence starter and the suggestions made during the brainstorm. Once they have finished, encourage volunteers to share their stories with the class.
Middle Session
Numeracy – Number and Place Value
As a class, count forwards to 50 in ones from any starting point, then by twos, fives and tens from zero. Provide each of the students with a copy of the Number, Word and Array Match-Up Worksheet. Monitor and support the students as they cut out the digits, words and array for each number and match them up. The students then paste the numbers and their different representations under the correct heading. When the students have finished, mark the worksheet together as a class.
Numeracy – Addition and Subtraction
Provide each student with a Lady Beetle Adding Activity. Demonstrate on the board how to use the number cards and dots on the lady beetle to add and subtract. Monitor and support the students as they use the lady beetle activity to independently add and subtract. Encourage volunteers to share their thought-processes with the class as they are carrying out the activity. As an extension, ask the students to record their number sentences in their books, or use larger numbers to add and subtract.
Literacy – Shared Reading
Choose a picture book to read and share with the students.
The Arts – Visual Arts
Have a class discussion about superheros and list the students’ ideas on the board. Provide each student with a copy of the Create Your Own Superhero worksheet. Ask the students to draw, colour and label their superheros. Encourage volunteers to share their superheros with the class.
