2-Digit Place Value Houses – Template

PDF | 3 pages|Grades: 1 - 2

A hands-on resource to consolidate students’ early understandings of place value.

Use this teaching resource when exploring two-digit place value with your students.

Students use the place value houses to construct two-digit numbers using the MAB ones and tens provided within the resource. (You may wish to print these on thick card for increased durability).

The ‘rooms’ inside each house are a visual reminder to students that there is only enough room for nine units or tens in each column. Once the ‘house’ is full, it is necessary to move over into the next ‘house’.

For example: If there are nine units in the units house, and you want to add another unit, you must now move all of the units into the tens house to create one ten.

Two versions of the resource are provided. One version contains visuals of MABs inside each place value house, which the students can colour to represent a number. The second version contains blank rooms, where the students can place the cut out MAB blocks to represent a number.

This resource was created in conjunction with Annie Walters at the Let’s Collaborate event.
