Practice adding 2-digit numbers with this set of 18 number sentence task cards.
If your students have discovered that there are more numbers than they can count on their hands (and feet!), it’s time to introduce 2-digit addition!
How to use these addition task cards
Through this activity, students use the addition algorithm to add two-digit numbers within 100.
Provide each student with a recording sheet (included) and the task cards to solve each addition sentence.
Use these task cards with mini whiteboards, maths workbooks, and smartboards for a quick maths warm-up.
Additional support and extension
For students who need some additional support in mastering the addition algorithm, it may be beneficial to provide manipulatives such as base-ten blocks, a number line or a hundreds chart to assist with the calculations.
Challenge those students who already demonstrated mastery of the concept to add one or two additional 2-digit numbers to each algorithm, then solve each one. They could then check their answers with a calculator.
Additional applications of the resource
Here are some other ways you might like to use these task cards in your maths lesson.
Place the task cards around the room in numerical order and give each student a recording sheet. Assign each student a number to start. Give students an appropriate amount of time to complete the addition algorithm, then say, “SCOOT.” At this time, the students will rotate to the next card. Continue in this manner until students have made it through all of the cards.
After you go through your addition lesson, pass out the task cards to students and have them calculate the sum independently. Provide them with a sticky note so that they can turn in their answer as a formative assessment.
Divide the students into two groups and have them sit down in lines facing each other. Use your smartboard or projector to show a task card and give the students time to solve the problem. On your cue, have the students turn their boards around so their partner can see their answer. If both students in a pair have the correct answer, their team gets two points. If one has the correct answer, the team gets one point.
