Sight Word Activity Worksheets for the Early Years

Sight words (sometimes referred to as ‘heart words’ or ‘tricky words’) are common words that often cannot be easily sounded out. For this reason, regular practice of both decoding and encoding sight words is important.

Working on sight words at home helps students with the repetition they need to recognise these words quickly and automatically. It also encourages parental involvement, which can be a major contributor to a child’s learning success.

This set of two sight word activity worksheets has been designed to provide students with a variety of ways to practise their sight words at home. Each grid is packed with 9 different activities that students can complete to help with sight word recognition. Some of these activities include:

  • Use magnetic letters or letter tiles to spell out your words.
  • Write a fun sentence for each of your words.
  • Write your words in the air using your finger.
  • Use a paintbrush and water to paint your words.
  • Circle any smaller words you can find in each of your words.

Consistent sight word practice is essential for early reading success, and with these grids, your students will be well on their way to mastering their sight words in no time!

Use These Sight Word Activity Grids in Your Classroom

While these sight word activity grids make a great take-home resource, they can be used in other ways in your phonics lesson. Here are a few suggestions from our teacher team:

  • Daily Warm-Ups – Start your daily phonics lesson with a quick sight word activity from the grid. Choose one task for the whole class to complete together, or allow students to pick a different activity each day.
  • Literacy Groups – Incorporate the activity grids into your literacy groups. Students can rotate through a sight word station where they choose and complete activities from the grid.
  • Personal Challenge – Have students complete tasks on the grid as part of a personal challenge. For example, challenge students to complete three activities in a week, and celebrate their accomplishments with a small reward or recognition.
