Data Maths Investigation – Line Up the Coins
A mathematics investigation about data, embedded in a real-world context.
This open-ended mathematics investigation has been designed to deepen students’ understanding of data, measurement and financial mathematics.
The scenario involves the school collecting money for a local charity.
Students are tasked with designing a template for coins to be placed on during the fundraising event. They will test how many coins fit on various templates that are included in the investigation and use this data to create their own.
Once the templates are complete, you can choose to hold the fundraiser at the school. Students record the number of coins collected and calculate the total value.
This teaching resource includes:
- a detailed description of the investigation for students
- tally sheets for determining the amount of coins that fit on each template
- a blank template
- three designed templates
