Duration of Time Project for Real-World Maths Learning

Understanding duration of time is an essential maths skill that helps students make sense of schedules, journeys and everyday planning. This hands-on Year 4 maths project gives students meaningful opportunities to calculate elapsed time, solve time-based problems and apply their understanding of hours, minutes and timetables in real-world contexts.

This resource has been designed to support students as they:

  • calculate elapsed time and duration,
  • solve practical time problems,
  • convert between units of time,
  • and apply time skills in meaningful situations.

The project format also helps promote deeper thinking, collaboration and mathematical discussion in the classroom.

Converting Units of Time Activities for Engaged Learning

These converting units of time activities can be used in a variety of engaging classroom ways, including:

  • Maths rotations — Students complete different project sections as collaborative stations.
  • Real-world investigations — Encourage students to connect time calculations to everyday events and schedules.
  • Partner planning tasks — Students work together to solve journey and timetable challenges.

Because the activities are practical and open-ended, the resource works well for differentiation and mathematical reasoning tasks.

Reading and Interpreting Timetables Made Easy

This project provides a low-prep and engaging way to reinforce reading and interpreting timetables alongside elapsed time and conversion skills in upper primary classrooms.

The resource is available as:

  • A ready-to-download PDF
  • An editable Google Slides version

Please note that you will be prompted to make your own copy of the Google Slides file before accessing the resource.
