Material Properties Worksheets for Year 4 & 5
Help your students think critically about why materials matter with this set of three Material Properties Worksheets. Each page presents everyday objects and invites students to decide which materials and properties were most appropriate for making the object.
These worksheets are perfect for year 4 and 5 learners who are beginning to connect material properties with their functions and purposes. It’s an engaging way to reinforce Chemical Sciences concepts while building reasoning and explanation skills.
Three Worksheets Exploring Material Choice and Properties
Across the three worksheets, students examine scenarios where the material used is completely inappropriate for the job. The worksheets included are described below:
- Fix It Up! Materials Worksheet – Students are presented with an object made from an obviously inappropriate material (e.g., a cardboard umbrella) and must identify the object’s function, the properties it needs, and suggest a better material.
- This or That? Comparing Materials Worksheet – Students are presented with a scenario to read and two material choices. They must use clues in the scenario to determine which material the object should be made from.
- Material Matters Worksheet – Students will examine an image of an object, determine its function, and decide which material would be best suited to making that product.
These tasks encourage students to think like designers, spotting problems, analysing material properties, and proposing better solutions.
