Strengthen Reading Comprehension with Active Monitoring

This Monitoring Understanding Poster has been created as a valuable classroom resource that helps students become more aware of their thinking and comprehension. Effective readers are constantly checking their understanding as they read. To do this, students actively monitor their understanding by:

  • Recognising what they comprehend
  • Identifying areas of confusion
  • Applying strategies to overcome challenges

How to Use This Monitoring Comprehension Anchor Chart

  • Introduce the concept – Discuss with students why monitoring understanding is important for becoming strong readers.
  • Model the strategy – Think aloud while reading a text, demonstrating how to recognise comprehension gaps and apply strategies.
  • Use as a reference – Display the poster in a visible location to remind students to check their understanding as they read.
  • Incorporate into reading discussions – Encourage students to share when they use monitoring strategies and how it helps them.
  • Support independent reading – Prompt students to reflect on their understanding during independent and guided reading sessions.
  • Pair with comprehension activities – Use it alongside graphic organisers, sticky notes, or think-pair-share activities to reinforce the strategy.
