What are Mood Trackers?

A mood tracker is a simple template that encourages children to think about how they are feeling every day. Each day, they colour in an item based on the feelings they put at the bottom of the page. Our templates have enough items to cover a whole month of feelings.

Mood Trackers:

  • Help children express how they are feeling simply by colouring an item.
  • Help teachers, parents, and carers around them keep track of their feelings.
  • Provide an opportunity for discussions around why they are feeling a certain way.
  • Help monitor and keep track if there are particular days that a child is feeling anxious/scared or sad.

How to Use Mood Trackers with Your Students

Young children experience feelings and emotions just like adults; however, they often don’t have the vocabulary to accurately express how they are feeling at any given time. During times of feeling overwhelmed or scared, young children find it hard to navigate such emotions. However, there are many ways you can help children express their emotions. Mood trackers are an easy way to monitor how children feel every day over time. Adults may also enjoy tracking their emotions as well.

Incorporating mood trackers into your classroom routine is a simple yet powerful way to check in with your students each day. As part of your morning routine, invite students to take out their mood tracker and colour in one item using a colour key you’ve created together as a class. This quick, visual activity gives you an instant snapshot of how everyone is feeling before the day begins—helping you identify who might need a little extra support, a check-in, or even a lighthearted moment to lift their mood. No more guessing how your students are arriving at school each day—this consistent practise helps you respond more intentionally and build stronger connections. Even better, this resource includes 12 engaging mood trackers—one for each month—so you can keep this meaningful routine going all year long.
