My Reading Rhythm — A Symphony of Stories Book Week Activity
Inspired by the CBCA Book Week 2026 theme, Symphony of Stories, this engaging literacy activity encourages students to explore how stories can have their own unique rhythm. By connecting key story events with sounds and movements, students develop sequencing, comprehension and creative thinking skills in a fun and memorable way.
Students read The Secret Symphony, a short story about a reader who discovers different stories can create different musical sounds and rhythms. They then identify important events from the text and create matching rhythms using actions such as clapping, tapping or stomping.
To save teachers valuable preparation time, a reading passage and answer key are included. Alternatively, the blank activity templates can be used with any class novel, picture book or independent reading text, making this a flexible resource for Book Week and beyond.
Creative Ways to Use This Reading Response Activity
This resource can be used in a variety of engaging ways:
- Book Week Literacy Stations – Students read the included story and create rhythms to match key events.
- Partner Performances – Students perform their reading rhythms for a classmate and explain how the sounds connect to the story.
- Any Book Extension Activity – Use the blank template with a class read-aloud, guided reading book or independent reading text.
