Equal Sharing Activity Mats for Building Early Division Skills

Understanding equal sharing is an important early maths concept that lays the foundation for division. Before students can solve division problems using numbers and symbols, they need opportunities to physically share collections into equal groups and see what fair sharing looks like in action.

The equal sharing activity includes multiple sharing mats and differentiated number cards, allowing students to practise sharing a range of quantities equally. The hands-on nature of the activity supports kinaesthetic learners while strengthening counting, grouping and problem-solving skills.

• Real-world sharing station – Combine the mats with classroom objects such as buttons, blocks or craft materials. Students can explore how equal sharing connects to everyday situations like sharing snacks, toys or supplies.
• Fair Share Detective – Intentionally create unequal groups on the mats and ask students to identify and correct the mistake. This encourages mathematical reasoning and rich discussion about what makes sharing fair.
