An Outdoor Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers Activity Your Students Will Love!

Turn your school grounds into a living science lab with this Outdoor Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers Activity.

This Outdoor Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers Activity is designed to get students outside to observe the natural world and identify examples of animal roles in habitats. This differentiated worksheet pack helps students identify and classify producers, consumers, and decomposers using real-life observations on campus.

Identify Examples of Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers on the Playground

Using these printable activity sheets, your students will head out to the playground to observe plants, animals, and signs of life in their schoolyard. As they explore, they’ll:

  • Record organisms they see in the environment
  • Decide whether each organism is a producer, consumer, or decomposer
  • Use evidence from their observations to support their classifications

This pack includes three differentiated worksheet versions to support a range of learners:

  • Easy – Students will draw and write examples.
  • Intermediate – Students will write the objects observed and mark their role.
  • Advanced – Students will write the observed objects and record their roles.
