Soil is organic material that covers Earth’s surface. Plants, animals and people all use soil to survive.

Some of the properties of soil include:

  • Colour – Common colours of soil are red, orange, black and brown.
  • Texture – How the soil feels when you touch it.
  • Filtration – How the soil retains water.
  • Structure – The size of the soil’s particles.
