Identify objects made of different materials with our hands-on ‘What’s It Made Of?’ Matching Materials Game.

What’s It Made Of? Matching Materials Game

Help your early primary students build confidence in identifying everyday materials with this fun, hands‑on Matching Materials Game. Designed for young learners beginning to explore what things are made from, this printable activity uses simple picture and material cards to help students connect objects with their materials through scientific observation.

This matching game is perfect for whole‑class lessons, small‑group rotations, science centres, or independent practice.

Explore Them All With This Identifying Materials Activity

This Identifying Materials Activity introduces students to eight commonly used materials:

  • wood
  • glass
  • plastic
  • fabric
  • paper
  • metal
  • stone
  • rubber

To play, students draw a picture card showing an everyday object, then look closely at its appearance, texture, and properties to decide which material card it belongs with. They match the object to the correct material word card by thinking about clues such as:

  • Is it shiny like metal?
  • Is it bendy or soft like fabric?
  • Is it see‑through like glass?
  • Is it soft or bouncy like rubber?
  • Is it rigid or hard like wood or stone?

An answer key is also included.
