Use a division think board to help students solve division problems in multiple ways while building conceptual understanding and mathematical confidence.
Division Think Board Activities for Building Division Understanding
Help students develop a deeper understanding of division with this engaging division think board resource. Designed to encourage flexible thinking, this activity pack gives students opportunities to solve division problems using multiple strategies and representations rather than relying on a single method.
The resource includes a division think board template, prompt cards and recording sheets that guide students through a variety of division representations, including equal groups, arrays, skip counting, repeated subtraction, fact families, concrete materials and division number sentences.
Through repeated exposure to different problem-solving approaches, students strengthen their understanding of division concepts, develop mathematical reasoning skills and make connections between visual models and number sentences. The task cards provide meaningful practice with both sharing and grouping division situations.
Creative Ways to Use This Year 2 Division Resource
This Year 2 division resource can be used in a variety of engaging classroom situations:
- Division Strategy Investigations: Challenge students to solve the same division task card using as many sections of the think board as possible. This encourages flexible thinking and helps students compare different division strategies.
- Maths Rotation Challenge: Place the task cards and think boards at a maths station where students work through division problems independently or with a partner, recording their thinking in multiple ways
- Mathematical Discussion Prompts: Use completed think boards as discussion starters, encouraging students to explain which representation they found most useful and why.
